FYI that tax season has been a pain in my tush the last few years b/c i've inevitably not paid enough taxes during the year which means i'm left owing a ton at the end of the year. that being said, i think of taxes like baby teeth -- the quicker they're out, the less annoying they'll be.
so for those of you (like my friend em) who leave your taxes until 4/14, shame on you! why suffer last-minute torture? just get them done already!
while this means that there will be less money sooner for those of you that owe taxes, at least you won't need to keep thinking about them. and for those of you that will be getting refunds, the only reason you should be behind is if you haven't gotten your W-2's in the mail yet.
at any rate, de'sha and i are big fans of H&R block's taxcut online. it's super easy and all you need to do is plug and play. as long as you have all your documents in front of you, the program takes you step-by-step through the entire process. you can even save and come back if you decide you can't sit on your butt for too long.
the best thing is that you can do both your fed and state taxes within the same program. granted, you can file CA taxes for free on the franchise tax board website. but if you're lazy like me, all it takes is a few clicks and all of your info is pulled directly from your fed forms and plopped into your state forms. so you only have to enter the info once. and doing both sets of taxes online costs less than 45 bucks!
so unless you really need/want one-on-one time with a tax expert, taxcut online should totally do the trick: http://www.hrblock.com/
btw, can i tell you how painful it is to owe $2700?! AUGH!!
